Indian Head Massage

What is Indian Head Massage?

Indian Head Massage is the practice of massaging the head, neck, shoulders and upper back. It is an incredibly relaxing and rejuvenating massage which aids the release of stress that has accumulated on the scalp and in the tissues, muscles and joints. Indian Head Massage strives to restore balance and inner harmony to the mind, body and spirit to improve the health of the individual. A sense of tranquility is achieved as the vital energy flow is rebalanced.

History of Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage has been practised in India for thousands of years. It derives from an ancient system known as 'Ayurveda', literally meaning 'The science of life and longevity'. Ancient Indians believed that the massage promoted strong hair, good health and encouraged the body's natural healing powers.

Potential Benefits of Indian Head Massage

  • Relieves muscle pain

Indian Head Massage can help relieve tight sore muscles by increasing the blood flow which increases the amount of oxygen and nutrition into the muscles.

  • Improves blood supply and encourages hair growth

During stress the scalp can tighten up and as a result can restrict blood flow to the area. Indian Head Massage can stimulate the blood flow to the follicles to loosen up the area. This stimulation has the added benefit of delivering nourishing nutrients to encourage hair growth and promote strong and shiny hair. Oils can be used to condition the hair.

  • Alleviates migraines and headaches

Tension in the upper back, neck and head can often lead to headaches. An Indian Head Massage will start with the upper back, arms and shoulders, helping to relax knots and relieve tension. Progressing to the neck and head to reduce headache-causing blockages and encourage better circulation of the cerebral fluid.

  • Reduces stress and tension

Massage releases tension by promoting relaxation in the muscles and calming the mind.

  • Soothes eyes and sinuses

Indian Head Massage involves working on the pressure points of the forehead and face which in turn relaxes and soothes tense muscles. Working on specific pressure points can also be useful to relieve blocked sinuses.

  • Stimulates the lymphatic system and improves circulation

Indian Head Massage stimulates and improves the lymphatic system and blood flow to the neck, in turn helping to remove waste products from the body.

  • Encourages balance and wellbeing

An Indian Head Massage works with the Ayurvedic concept of aiming to heal and more importantly balance. Working on the chakras has a powerful effect in bringing the energy of the body back into balance.
